There
are three different avenues that people, organizations
and governments are pursuing to help end hunger.
Since as many as 40,000 people die every day from hunger,
the first and most urgent way to help is to provide
food for those who are hungry. Many local, national
and international organizations and agencies help deliver
life-saving food supplies around the world to those
who suffer from hunger because of poverty, disasters
or war. In the United States an extensive system of
food banks allows excess food, collected from supermarkets
and individuals, to be given to people in need. Many
rely on soup kitchens in community buildings and places
of worship for a warm meal. Government programs like
food stamps and school breakfast and lunch programs
help prevent many families from going without meals.
The next step is to help people and their communities
to find sustainable ways to feed themselves, through
education and improving agricultural practices.
The long-term solution to the problem of hunger is to
find the reasons why people are going hungry, and to
address those root causes. As the Better World Movement
strives to create a more peaceful, just and sustainable
world, we are working towards creating a world without
hunger.
