Ending
hunger is one of the United Nations' most important
goals. There are two United Nations agencies specifically
devoted to addressing the important issue of food
security -- ensuring that all people have access
all of the time to the food that they need to lead healthy
lives.
Since its founding in 1945, FAO, the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations, has been helping
to lead international efforts to end world hunger. The
agency provides information and expertise to developing
countries, helping to improve agriculture, fisheries
and forestry practices to increase the available food
supply and provide better nutrition. FAO also provides
a forum where representatives of all nations can debate
international policies and negotiate international agreements
to help build a world without hunger.

The
World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations
agency that works to meet emergency needs for food around
the world in times of disasters, for refugees and in
the ongoing battle to feed the world's poor who have
no access to food. It also promotes policies that support
economic and social development that will benefit the
world's poor and hungry.
