If
we can conquer space, we can conquer childhood hunger.
-- Buzz Aldrin

There
are genuinely sufficient resources in the world
to ensure that no one, nowhere, at no time,
should go hungry.

Hungry
people cannot be good at learning or producing anything,
except perhaps violence.
-- Pearl Bailey
We
are a country that prides itself on power and weatlh,
yet there are millions of children who go hungry every
day. It is our responsibility, not only as a nation,
but also as individuals, to get involved. So, next
time you pass someone on the street who is in need,
remember how lucky you are, and don't turn away.
-- Lesley Boone

The
fact is that there is enough food in the world
for everyone. But tragically, much of the world's
food and land resources are tied up in producing
beef and other livestock--food for the well
off--while millions of children and adults suffer
from malnutrition and starvation.
-- Dr.Walden Bello
The
American fast food diet and the meat eating
habits of the wealthy around the world support
a world food system that diverts food resources
from the hungry. A diet higher in whole grains
and legumes and lower in beef and other meat
is not just healthier for ourselves but also
contributes to changing the world system that
feeds some people and leaves others hungry.
-- Dr.Walden Bello

…the
first essential component of social justice
is adequate food for all mankind. Food is the
moral right of all who are born into this world.
-- Norman Borlaug
Without
food, man can live at most but a few weeks;
without it, all other components of social justice
are meaningless.
-- Norman Borlaug
If
you desire peace, cultivate justice, but at
the same time cultivate the fields to produce
more bread; otherwise there will be no peace.

When
we work to end childhood hunger, we are giving our
love to kids who need it so much they will never ask
for it.

One
of the greatest feelings in the world is knowing
that we as individuals can make a difference.
Ending hunger in America is a goal that is literally
within our grasp.
-- Jeff Bridges
35
million people in the U.S. are hungry or don't
know where their next meal is coming from, and
13 million of them are children. If another
country were doing this to our children, we'd
be at war.
-- Jeff Bridges

Public
charities, foodbanks and church pantries are doing
more than ever before, but they can't keep up with
the need. We can never end hunger only through the
wonderful work of local charities. Like other Western
democracies, we must end our national problem of hunger
through national and political leadership. Charity
is nice for some things, but not as a way to feed
a nation. We don't protect our national security through
charity, and we shouldn't protect our families and
children that way either.
-- Jeff Bridges
America
and Americans always rise to the occasion. If we say
we are going to stamp out hunger, I believe we will.
-- Christie Brinkley
Most
of our citizenry believes that hunger only affects
people who are lazy or people who are just looking
for a handout, people who dont' want to work, but,
sadly, that is not true. Over one-third of our hungry
people are innocent children who are members of households
that simply cannot provide enough food or proper nutrition.
And to think of the elderly suffering from malnutrition
is just too hard for most of us. Unlike Third World
nations, in our country the problem is not having
too little – it is about not caring enough! Write
your elected representatives and promote support for
the hungry.
-- Erin Brokovich
Many
people think that hunger is unavoidable in any
society, even a society that is blessed with great
abundance. That is not true. The European community
does not have widespread hunger. America, which
leads the world in so many ways, can end childhood
hunger within its borders.
-- Pierce Brosnan |

Peace
is no mere matter of men fighting or not fighting.
Peace, to have meaning for many who have known
only suffering in both peace and war, must be
translated into bread or rice, shelter, health,
and education, as well as freedom and human dignity
- a steadily better life. If peace is to be secure,
long-suffering and long-starved, forgotten peoples
of the world, the underprivileged and the undernourished,
must begin to realize without delay the promise
of a new day and a new life.
-- Ralph J. Bunche |

When

When you ask why the poor have no food, they call
you a communist.

"We

one-third rich and two-thirds hungry."
-- Jimmy Carter |

If
we can muster up that degree of commitment and
get away from the uniquely American perception
that if something can't be done immediately
it isn't worth doing, then I think the Hunger
Movement, this small but growing minority of
us, can have a truly significant impact.
-- Harry Chapin
What
is needed is a marriage of two impulses, a coupling
of the urge to do something positive with the
willingness to constantly re-evaluate how effectively
our actions lead to our goal - that of ending
world hunger …

To
think that one child would go to bed hungry somewhere
in this country is heartbreaking... to know how many
do is virtually incomprehensible. This is not only
a problem that exists in the far reaches of the globe.
It happens right here in our own backyard. Together,
as concerned citizens, we must do more to make sure
every child's needs are met.
-- Katie Couric

The
problems we face today, violent conflicts, destruction
of nature, poverty, hunger and so on, are human-created
problems which can be resolved through human

a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood. We need
to cultivate a universal responsibility for
one another and the planet we share.

When
we think about millions of hungry children, we don't
think about America. We relate the problem to other
nations, like Ethiopia, India or Somalia. The sad
truth is that one is five American kids is at risk
due to poor nutrition.
-- Kristen Davis
We
cannot stick our heads in the sand concerning the
issue of hunger in America. Even though this subject
seldom reaches the front page of our newspapers or
is featured on news programs because of its lack of
sensationalism, the problem exists in massive proportions
and must be defeated.

It

Every

theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those
who are cold and are not clothed.

Many
times, a child's struggle against hunger begins
before he or she is born because the mother

The
full extent of the problem of hunger is not obvious
to most of us. We see the homeless, but there are
a great number of working poor, struggling to survive,
who don't have enough money to put adequate food on
the table. We must find a solution to this ever-increasing
problem — and quickly.
-- Scott Glenn

Our
society is only as healthy as our most vulnerable
citizens. It is unconscionable that the weakest
links in our country are our hungry children.
No other Western industrialized nation has widespread
hunger within its borders. We really must put
an end to hunger in the United States if we
are to keep our prosperity and protect the future.
-- Linda Gray

No
one in this country need go hungry, and alleviating
the problem is primarily a matter of readjusting our
priorities. In both the government and the private
sector, self-interest has displaced the ideal of community
that made this country great. The old world view of
"us, we, our" has been replaced by "I, me, mine."
The reasons for this are manifold and complex, but
at the end of the day, we need to remember that, if
one of us is suffering needlessly, all of us are diminished.
-- Don Henley, singer/songwriter
In
this country of the bountiful harvest, everyone can
have enough to eat — we have it! We grow enough for
everyone. Let's share it by supporting our local foodbanks,
houses of worship and organizations who help people.
-- Catherine Hicks, actress
It's
appalling that there should be hunger anywhere, but
particularly in a country like America, where there
is also such great wealth.
-- Elizabeth Hurley, actress
Twelve

Most
Americans think of hunger as a problem affecting only
places like India, Africa or South America. But it
is a tragic reality that our country has millions

There
is a hidden epidemic threatening the lives of millions
of Americans...hunger. In this land of plenty, it
is unthinkable that fellow citizens are going hungry.
Included among these millions are children who, due
to malnourishment, are not developing to their full
potential intellectually, emotionally or behaviorally.
The fortunate must provide for the unfortunate...

To
know that children are suffering and going without
food is intolerable in a society such as ours. I hope

We all have a responsibility to bring back life to

"Our
policy is directed not against any country or

-- George C. Marshall (1880-1959)

Every
child should be given the right to grow up and become

childhood hunger should be a national priority.

I

Not that I wasn’t enjoying life, but I never

It
saddens me to think that there are children in America
who are hungry every day of their lives. No one can

we could end this crisis.
-- Tim McGraw, singer
We

-- Donna Mills, actress
It

It

I
went to bed hungry many nights as a child. It was
a Dream that dressed me up when I was ragged, and
it was a Dream that filled me up when I was hungry.
Now it's my Dream to see that no child in this world
ever goes hungry, certainly not here in America, the
most bountiful country in the world. We can do better...we
must!
-- Dolly Parton
We

working to put an end to this cruel and needless
blight once and for all.

A
hungry people listens not to reason, not cares for
justice, nor is bent by any prayers.
-- Seneca (Lucius Annaeus Seneca)
Childhood
hunger in America is as much a paradox as it is
a tragedy. Why, in the wealthiest country in the
world, should hunger darken the lives and dreams
of 12 million children and their families? I believe
that, when Americans learn the facts and understand
how their involvement can make a difference, banishing
childhood hunger will be a national, local and
personal priority.
-- Martin Sheen |

It's
hard to believe that, in the 1970's, America was virtually
hunger-free. During the past two decades, we have
allowed hunger to attack our most precious resource,
our children. We must reinstate and strengthen programs
to eliminate this blight on our society.
-- Kurtwood Smith, actor

"There
is much suffering in the world - physical, material,
mental. The suffering of some can be blamed
on the greed of others. The material and physical
suffering is suffering from hunger, from homelessness,
from all kinds of diseases. But the greatest
suffering is being lonely, feeling unloved,
having no one. I have come more and more to
realize that it is being unwanted that is the
worst disease that any human being can ever
experience."
-- Mother Teresa (1910-1998)

Let's
share our abundance and make our country stronger.
We can encourage programs that collect and distribute
excess prepared food to local organizations that are
helping the hungry in our own communities. We can
also support programs that supply commodities to food
banks. It's all part of committing our country's wealth
and resources to end childhood hunger.
-- John Travolta
